Love’s
Lantern
I gave my love a lantern
That flickers in the dark
To show I’m thinking of her
When we are far apart
And if she ever has her doubts
While I am far away
She’ll be sure of my love
Until the lantern fades
She brought to me the token
That parting lovers bring
The colours of the rainbow
Inside a magic ring
She swore that she would be my love
Until it’s diamonds fade
I pledged that like a swallow
I would return again
And with my journey ended
I needed no disguise
To hide the way life’s changed me
I stood unrecognised
I placed the bright ring in her hand
I saw her hesitate
She turned and lit the lantern
It burned till break of day
Awakened by a swallow
She vowed her love anew
Saying I’d forsake the things I own
To vagabond with you
She says she’ll be my lady
Wherever we may lay
So long as diamonds sparkle
And lanterns light our way
